StoryLab: Crash Course Mythology

Flood myth painted by Gustave Dore.

Notes: Crash Course Mythology

  • What is Myth?
    • It touches on literature, history, anthropology, psychology, religion, and even science.
    •  Myths can be read and understood in many ways.
    • Stories that are not said to be true or not true
    • Don't know who originated them
    • People tend to believe myths
    • When watching this video helped me to better see what mythology is and how other people view it. There are people who think that it is all religious and focuses on gods as the main characters which is not always the case. There are also times when folklore will come into a mythology that I have seen but have not really thought of.
  • Theories of Myth
    • It was interesting to learn how myths evolved over time and how people saw it.
    • Psychologists looked to myths to explain human experiences, which was a little surprising.
    • Mono-Myth?
  • The Hero's Journey
    • They are almost always the center character of a story and they have different definitions of a hero whether they have power or are looked up to.
    • The Hero's journey is a mono-myth. I am happy that it showed what that really was because I was wondering about that during the last video.
    • We are all heroes on our own journey
    • Has 3 Parts and 17 subparts. That seems like a lot of things to include in a story but it does not have to have each aspect which is helpful to know.
